5 Songs About: Terrace Martin (that you might not know about)

With the release of the brand new album by The Pollyseeds now unveiled, and work on the new album by Herbie Hancock still to come - producer, songwriter and saxophonist Terrace Martin is riding a well-deserved wave of incredible success so here's a list of 5 songs of which either featured, or were produced by the brilliant Terrace Martin that you might, maybe, perhaps, didn't know had him involved...

'Memories' by Adam Turchin featuring Terrace Martin, Rose Gold, Brandon Ashe, Josef Leimberg & Robert "Sput" Searight
Producer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Turchin delivered his stellar debut outing earlier this year through Ropeadope Records and boasted an incredible lineup of musicians including of course friend and collaborator, Terrace Martin.  Martin appears on several songs throughout - on vocoder and sax duties - but it's the album closer that really steals the show here.

'For Free?' by Kendrick Lamar
'To Pimp A Butterfly' - the seminal album from Kendrick Lamar is everything it has always been proclaimed to be so probably requires little introduction.  The bold embrace of jazz throughout - along with the slew of musicians it introduced to the world - proved to be a winner and it's in no small part down to songs with the charm and personality of 'For Free?' [Read our exclusive feature on the musicians involved here].

'The Awakening' by Josef Leimberg
We've gushed over this release by trumpeter Josef Leimberg many times on this site - so one more time couldn't hurt!  Leimberg - the other half of the production duo with Martin called LoveDragon - creates a masterful and exquisite album and two songs featuring Terrace on sax can only be a good thing.  We'll leave you with their cover of Miles Davis's 'Lonely Fire'...

'Give em Hell' by Talib Kweli f/t Coi Mattison & Lyfe Jennings
Sharing production duties with Battlecat on this song, from 2007, Terrace Martin found himself on an album with heavy-hitting guests and heavy-hitting production but his contribution delivered one of the standout tracks from Kweli's biggest-selling solo album.

'Persevere' by Robert Glasper Experiment f/t Luke James, Snoop Dogg & Lupe Fiasco
Robert Glasper's 'Black Radio' series went on to solidify the band as a household name after its crossover appeal and the inclusion of vocalists Jill Scott, Lalah Hathaway and Erykah Badu.  While most of the stars took centre-stage, our spotlighted star jumped in behind the boards for his longtime friend and collaborator making a star-studded track even more star-studded.

What I'm listening to... (July 2017)

'Salve o Mar' by Sabrina Malheiros
We're close.  So darn close.  On the 28th July, Far Out Records have the distinct pleasure in releasing the brand new album by Sabrina Malheiros, entitled 'Clareia'.  If you're new to Sabrina Malheiros, this is a perfect introductory track to catch you up on her exquisite take on Brazilian bossa nova that, this time, sees a small but refreshing injection of disco/boogie thrown into the mix.

'Phases' by Christian Scott f/t Sarah Elizabeth Charles
What a year for Ropeadope Records, and what a year for Christian Scott.  This beautiful track comes from one of the three projects that the genius that is Christian Scott has lined up this year as part of his Centennial Trilogy: 'Ruler Rebel' (which is where you can find this track) and 'Diaspora' have already been released with the third due later this year.  Both projects have the distinction of featuring beautiful vocal contributors from Sarah Elizabeth Charles so fingers crossed the third does as well.

'Lover' by Trope
Coinceidentally, all three tracks featured amongst this list come from record labels that are having incredible years.  And Jazz Re:freshed is soaring as high as anyone else.  We've talked about this release before but we still have so much love for Trope's contribution to Jazz Re:freshed's 5ive series that we couldn't help but shout this one out again.  Awesome work.

Confessions Of A Curly Mind: "Maxwell/Musze"

On the 23rd June 2017, we were immeasurably proud to present an epic 5 hour show on one of this site's and station's heroes and frankly, there really is only one person walking the face of this planet we would have wanted to present it... Mista Vee (also known as Vahe).

In truth (he doesn't know this by the way) but Vahe has been a dream inclusion for this station since its inception.  Blue-in-Green:RADIO never wanted to be just a station where DJs or presenters just come and play music - we always felt we had that little something different to offer and it's through excellence like what's presented within this show (and the continual excellence of our cherished First Lady DJ Rhonnie Rhon and others who have gifted us their time and incredible style of work) that we hope to build our reputation on.

By no means a 'best of', this is the official b-sides, remixes and rarities collection for the true Maxwell fans amongst us.  Tracklist and show is below and so check out enjoy...
