'Heritage' marks the latest release from multi-instrumentalist and composer Andreas Paragioudakis who channels an exorbitant amount of studies, travel, accolades and experience into this stunning piece of work.
Cretan-born and now Austria-based, Paragioudakis has spent the years in between honing and studying his craft across both countries beginning with an affection for playing piano which ultimately would lead to a passion for the Greek sounds of the mandolin, the lute and the lyra. A year in India studying Indian classical music would add an even deeper layer of understanding to his compositions and find him continually looking to expand his knowledge, perspectives and repertoire.
And now as an educator in his own right, Paragioudakis is always looking to shine a light on that which he holds most dear - a trait that continues to permeate its way into every aspect of his music. From his involvement as artistic director to music festivals including the Cretan Festival ECHOANTHOS Village of Sounds and the Austrian SOUNDBLOSSOM festival, to helming expansive and large-scale musical ensembles to co-founding the Soundblossom association in Austria as a vehicle to help creatives facilitate collaboration and support music festivals.
Paragioudakis' passions have long served as a noble cause and it's a standard of care and consideration that is lovingly translated into his own music releases... the incredible cinematic scope of Paragioudakis' collaboration with Marcello Wick for 'Orpheus & Eurydike' (sic) has served as one of the greatest demonstrations of Paragioudakis' imagination. A brilliant recounting of the ill-fated love story is elegantly scored over sixty minutes charting one of Greek mythology's most celebrated tales and the sorrow-filled Orpheus by the story's conclusion.
Similarly, the Terracotta Project's debut in 'Daphne' continues the celebration of Greek music and culture with the Cretan trio - Paragioudakis alongside Yiannis Papatzanis and Yiannis Polychronakis - presenting an exquisite selection of tracks aiming to capture snapshots of Cretan life.
An extension of that ideal but, but in a significantly broader sense, can be found in latest release, 'Heritage'. Featuring a diverse array of musicians from across the world, Paragioudakis' chamber ensemble represents a scintillating slice of magic with folk-inspired, string laden compositions that relish moments of spirited joy and bask in bittersweet lament. The rousing 'Waves' serves as a delicious opening number as Paragioudakis' resolute piano is brilliantly set against the orchestral backdrop that builds to a glorious crescendo. 'Kyklonas', similarly, is beautifully paced and once again balances unbridled energy alongside affectionate intimacy.
Ultimately, 'Heritage' is a celebration of the things that bind us, whether through the traditions we inherit, the places that shape us or the connections we forge along the way. Throughout a lengthy, decorated and successful career, Andreas Paragioudakis continues to teach us that music is a language through which these experiences can be shared. Through his most recent project, Paragioudakis proves that heritage is never simply something to look back on, but something we continue to carry with us.
